As we’ve discussed before, Bravo, being the king of reality television, didn’t dare let HGTV steal the real estate reality show spotlight from them. Tonight, they reveal their weapon, entitled 9 by Design. 9 By Design follows the beautiful and charmed life of couple Bob and Cortney Novogratz, who, sans any formal training, created the interior design firm Sixx Design. The couple has six children together; as the series opens, they’re on their seventh. They’ve built their legacy by taking derelict homes in downtown Manhattan and turning them into stunning properties worthy of millions – and they’ve lived in many of these homes along the way. On Bravo, we’ll watch them attempt to find a place to live temporarily while their West Village wonderland is built.

Of course, the question remains as to whether viewers have room in their DVRs for more than one ridiculous real estate reality show. The Novogratz’s, notably, are decidedly more famous and well known than those in HGTV’s Selling New York, which will undoubtedly help the show gain its footing. It’s one thing to see brokers attempt to stage and sell completed residences, but it’s a whole other ball game to watch a couple demolish a home and build it back up. 9 by Design promises to be less of a polished surface than Selling New York – though clips of the show seem to illustrate a perfect marriage and perfectly behaved children – than its competition on HGTV, but whether the world really needs another renovation show is questionable.

Commenters in the blogosphere are eager to call out Bob and Cortney as famewhores – but we’ll wait until the show airs tonight to make our own judgement.
