Vintage Trains Return to Subway

To celebrate and advertise the return of Boardwalk Empire to HBO on September 25th, the company did an interesting advertising campaign. They paid the MTA to bring out a vintage train from the 1920s and run it along the Express 2/3 track on the west side of Manhattan throughout the month of September on Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 6PM.

Straphangers will ride in style if they catch this beautiful and immaculate train–I’m sure going to try to get on one.  I’ve never seen the series, but this definitely makes …

That’s Mr. Cammeyer to You

Would you rather live at 650 Sixth Avenue, 50 West 20th Street, or The Cammeyer? Before you answer – they’re all the same building. This 1892 Ladies Mile monolith, traditionally identified by its Sixth Avenue address, has recently become The Cammeyer (which used to be the name of a shoe store on the premises), which is evidently thought by someone to be most appealing.
Toward the end of 2010, it was reported that more than 50% of the available units in The Cammeyer had been sold – a marked improvement over …

Vintage New York Real Estate Listings

If you love living in New York, you probably have several automatic responses when friends outside the city comment on how expensive it is to live here. “Yes,” you might patiently tell them, “but remember, you save a lot of money by not needing a car.” Or: “Yes, but after all, it is the center of the known universe.” We happily eschew savings, forego vacations, and cram our lives into tiny rooms, just because we want to be a part of it.
I used to think that if I had a …

Language and Fair Housing

One week after the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., Congress passed Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act, known as the federal Fair Housing Act. This legally prohibited race and religion-based discrimination against people seeking to rent or buy a home. In 1988, the act was amended to include people with children and people with disabilities. Seven years later, the Department of Housing and Urban Development pronounced certain gray-area phrases (“master bedroom,” which suggests a household hierarchy; “bachelor apartment,” which suggests the absence of family) acceptable.
Because gray areas are …

How Using a CondoDomain Broker Will Save YOU Money When You Rent!

As evidenced by the growing trend of landlords eliminating concessions such as free rent and paying broker’s fees, the rental climate in Manhattan is becoming less of a renter’s market.
According to a recent article in the New York Times, brokers can be a valuable asset as they can save you money with their knowledge of the market and provide access to available apartments you would not be able to find on your own.
Another added bonus of using an agent is having someone on your side protecting you from the various …
