NYC Fireworks

New York City likes things big, spectacular, and better than anywhere else. The fireworks for July 4th were no exception to this NYC obsession with all things grandiose, and Manhattanites were treated to an amazing display yet again. This year also saw a lifting of a citywide ban on fireworks to bring in revenue, but the best bangs could be seen from Macy’s Fourth of July fireworks show, which lit up the sky and could be seen from every part of the island.

I hope you enjoy this view of the …

NYEveningTelegram-dec29-1923-4

Need a break from the rigors of the contemporary New York real estate market? Once again, we have just the thing to ease your jangled nerves – a look at what real estate was like during assorted golden ages of our city’s glorious past.

How would you like to live in a three-room bungalow on a roof garden, on the west side of midtown Manhattan? But wait – the place has bath, steam, and hot water, and it’s partly furnished. And not only that – it’s also 1923, which is the …

Looking Up

The cautious word about town is that the New York City real estate market may be revitalized. “No, it’s not like the wild days of 2007,” admits Katherine Dykstra of the New York Post, “when dozens of new-construction buildings dotted much of the city.” And it cannot be denied that many of the buildings resulting from that boom remain largely vacant. But available units are now beginning to sell, and new development, stagnant for the last few years, seems to be swinging back into action.
The elegant Ladies Mile building at …

Damon Runyon in 2011

It is along about four in the morning, and The Brain is walking me up and down Broadway in front of Mindy’s restaurant. The Brain is talking with great importance about something, but I wish to confess I am only somewhat listening, although The Brain believes he has my full scope, on account of I am nodding my head most pleasantly. Truthfully I want no truck at the moment with walking up and down Broadway in front of Mindy’s, as I am newly loaded with lettuce and eager for some …

That’s Mr. Cammeyer to You

Would you rather live at 650 Sixth Avenue, 50 West 20th Street, or The Cammeyer? Before you answer – they’re all the same building. This 1892 Ladies Mile monolith, traditionally identified by its Sixth Avenue address, has recently become The Cammeyer (which used to be the name of a shoe store on the premises), which is evidently thought by someone to be most appealing.
Toward the end of 2010, it was reported that more than 50% of the available units in The Cammeyer had been sold – a marked improvement over …

Vintage New York Real Estate Listings

If you love living in New York, you probably have several automatic responses when friends outside the city comment on how expensive it is to live here. “Yes,” you might patiently tell them, “but remember, you save a lot of money by not needing a car.” Or: “Yes, but after all, it is the center of the known universe.” We happily eschew savings, forego vacations, and cram our lives into tiny rooms, just because we want to be a part of it.
I used to think that if I had a …

The Highly Visible Essex House

It seems you simply can’t look at the majestic skyline of Central Park South without thinking of the words Essex House. That’s because of the gigantic red neon letters which say Essex House. They sit atop a stately 1931 art deco skyscraper, known, by no coincidence, as the Essex House.
This 43-story luxury hotel was designed by Frank Grad, and was originally known as the Park Tower. Later it became the Seville Towers. In 1974, 148 of its suites were converted to condominiums. In 2005 the Dubai Investment Group acquired the …

Home is Where?

The attitude of a New Yorker toward New York City, like the city itself, evolves over time.
When I first moved to the city in the nineties, I was a hungry young artist, eager to add my name to the endless list of bohemian aspirants who have come to New York to work on their dreams. I therefore considered the East Village the ideal place to live, and all other neighborhoods, whatever their charms, felt less like home.
But I wound up on the Upper East Side instead, and after a period …
