What’s in a Name (or a Neighborhood)?

Every so often, we receive breaking news of a so-called “new New York City neighborhood.” In recent decades, we’ve been asked to add TriBeCa (the “triangle below Canal Street”), NoHo (“north of Houston Street,” modeled on the forty-year-old designation of SoHo, “south of Houston Street”), and even DUMBO (“down under the Manhattan Bridge overpass,” believe it or not) to our local lexicons. Even more recently, there have been attempts to brand NoLita (“north of Little Italy”), CanDo (“Canal Street downtown”), and BoHo (“Bowery south of Houston Street,” whose nickname at …

When It Snow’s In New York…Be Prepared

It was another snow day here in New York City, and I don’t know if you noticed but the day was a perfect for heading to New York public parks for some fun in the snow. Minus the transit troubles, the city was beautiful. Just check out my friend Gillian’s view outside her balcony on East 89th Street, a tree line shot right to Central Park:

If you are a new comer to New York, or you are planning to buy a new condo in the area, here are some tips …

Twenty-Something’s Adaptation To New York Prices

The New York Times recently reported that twenty-somethings moving to New York for the first few years are doing everything they can do to survive in this expensive city during this horrible economic slump. Being a twenty-something myself, going on my fourth year in the big apple, I understand all these baby New Yorker woes.
Living in a city where you have to start out residing in a windowless box, sleeping on a twin bed with your feet hanging off one end is not the ideal situation for any young adult …

4,000 New Luxury Condos Currently Sit Vacant

The economy has been anything but kind to the world of New York real estate, and to the real estate market in general – but the shocking statistic above emphasizes just how bad things are. Though market reports have seemingly shown that things are on the upswing, Crain’s claims that currently, over 4,000 new luxury apartments are sitting vacant and unused here in New York City. Even worse, these units are in 138 condo buildings that owe the city a total of $3.8 million in back taxes. Interestingly, in a …

52 East 4th Street: Property of the Day

52 East 4th Street, otherwise known as Scarano on the Bowery, is home to a bevy of famous folks, including John Legend – but that’s not the only reason we love it. Thanks to a decidedly trendy downtown neighborhood and a bevy of incredible features, 52 East 4th Street is one of our dream pads. Located in the heart of NoHo, the 15-story 52 East 4th Street Condominium was developed by the HK Organization and designed by the controversial Robert M. Scarano, Jr. The project has 14 apartments and three …

Rents Creep Back Up in New York City

Last year, we signed a lease in Gramercy. The apartment, at market value, would have been expensive, but the landlord was offering two months free, spread out over a twelve month lease, which made the previously out of reach apartment affordable. All over the city, individuals signed leases just like ours – except sometimes, their lease signing came with a free gym membership, a free iPod, an owner paid commission. Thanks to the recession, the past year in New York has undeniably been a renter’s market, but according to recent …

Out and About in NYC… 40 Bond Street

What a day!  80 degrees and sunny in April in NYC… If I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes, I can’t swear I’d believe it.  I obviously had to be outside, and through my wandering, I arrived at 40 Bond, an incredible piece of architecture hanging out down in Soho, east of Lafayette.

Designed by Ian Schrager’s, the building is clad in a glass curtain wall with a cast aluminum gate; the 27 loft style condos are on 11 floors.  While I didn’t get to go inside, sources tell me …

Selling New York Finally Makes a Deal

It’s our third week into the fabulosity that is HGTV’s new show, Selling New York, and finally, we encountered someone worth of the word fabulosity: New York fashion designer Indashio. On last night’s show, Indashio, feathered cap on head and wishlist in hand, was determined to find a perfect new live/work space. His budget was $15,000 a month for a rental apartment, and he was hoping to find something bigger and better than his current 2 bedroom/2 bathroom abode. On Indashio’s wishlist? A high floor. A room for his studio. …
