In with the new architecture critic: Michael Kimmelman in the New York Times

After the announcement that Nicolai Ouroussoff will be stepping down early last month, it was announced last week that Michael Kimmelman will be replacing him as resident architecture critic for the New York Times. Ouroussoff stepped into the position in 2004 after writing for the Los Angeles Times for several years. Like his mentor Herbert Muschamp, Ouroussoff was a profound lover of cities, and his writings always tried to juxtapose the work of a single architect with the urban landscape and architectural stylings of the neighborhood surrounding the building. He was also …

5 City Real Estate Opportunities No Investor Should Ignore

Real Estate markets in cities across the United States have had a rocky few years. The combination of downtown overbuilding and the economic recession was a one-two punch that drove property values down and increased uncertainty in the major cities. As we head into the dog days of summer, there are strong signs that many cities have started to emerge from their dog markets and present a viable, and in many cases a very strong, investment opportunity.
There are industry-wide influences, of course. Prices are at very reasonable levels in most …

High Line Park already drawing more development?

I’ve already written about the developments on the west side of Manhattan. The newest park on the island is continuing to expand. High Line provides a lush walkway for amblers who want to wander up and down Soho and Chelsea while taking in views of the Hudson and the downtown skyline. It’s fast becoming one of my favorite spots in the city.
It seems that it’s becoming a favorite of developers, too. Curbed is reporting that a new development may be in the pipeline at 11th and 23rd street (the area pictured …

Brownstone Development Denied

Developer Louis Greco recently ventured into a project in Brooklyn Heights for 27 Cranberry Street. He proposed to use brownstone to build a new townhouse construction. The developer purchased the empty lot for 1.5 million dollars last year. However, the Landmarks Preservation Committee halted plans on the venture; citing a concern for the other residents of the neighborhood.
Former Brooklyn Heights Association President, Tom van den Bout designed the townhouse for Greco and even after being denied his plans, felt that his design would be a great addition for the …

The Upper East Side: Traditional Style and Modern Design on a Budget

The Upper East Side has a reputation for being the upper crust; with some of the most expensive real estate in the world, this slice of Manhattan has been the destination of the ultrarich for over a century. However, this doesn’t mean that it is out of everyone’s price range. With condos as low as 500,000, bargain-hunters can find elegance and luxury on a budget.
The neighborhood is a long rectangle starting at the southern end of Central Park at 59th street and ending to the north at 96th street. In …

Coney Island Dreams

Many New Yorkers are too distraught over the death of Coney Island’s sparkling past to imagine that it might also have a sparkling future. I join them in their cynicism. After all, other supposed revitalizations – Times Square leaps to mind – have tended to replace one unfortunate state of affairs with another.
But this week comes news that construction of John Catsimatidis’ proposed Ocean Dreams condominium complex (for the western side of the boardwalk) could begin next year. And with the old Coney Island of our dreams now irrevocably consigned …
