A Photo Tour of Proposed WTC Designs

Almost ten years later, Curbed has posted a small retrospective of the different proposed designs to replace Ground Zero in Downtown Manhattan. It’s interesting that most of the proposed designs involved some sort of courtyard at the center not unlike the winning design. While Curbed is a tad snarky about just how much attention the development has got, a quick glance at the gallery shows that the tragedy inspired a number of ambitious architectural ideas.
You can see a full and official account of the competing designs here [warning: PDF]. What …

What Exactly is Zucotti Park?

As Zucotti Park becomes ground zero for the Occupy Wall Street protest, the small sliver of lower Manhattan has received a lot of attention from the mainstream media and bloggers who normally wouldn’t know anything about this small green space just west of Liberty and Broadway.
Zucotti Park is 33,000 square feet of privately owned land that is accessible and free to the public; since it is private but open to the public, people are free to come and go as they please, and even sleep there if they so desire. …

Midtown Games Turns Times Square into a Racecourse

New Yorkers have a complex relationship with Midtown; the home of beautifully preserved tenement houses in Hell’s Kitchen, alongside some of the best restaurants in the world, and the home of luxurious condos with sweeping views of the architectural masterpieces of the city, the neighborhood is also seen as a tourist hotspot and center for corporate activity. The area can be busy during the day, particularly Times Square, with its throngs of tourists languidly ambling about the streets and taking snapshots or–Heaven forbid–jumping into Olive Garden for a bite to …

Color Photos of New York City in the 1940′s

The Daily Mail has posted some beautiful hi-res photos of NYC during World War II by Charles Weever Cushman, an Indiana-based photographer who visited the city in 1941 and took some beautiful color snapshots of the city. Many of the pictures are of the sorts of tourist hotspots that are still frequently captured by tourists today, and it’s fascinating to see not only how much the city has changed, but how much it has stayed the same.
As time goes by the “New” in “New York” will become increasingly ironic, and …

Operation “Occupy Wall Street” Looming

A grassroots effort to Occupy Wall Street from September 17th has been making the rounds on Twitter, and now blogs are reporting on the movement as well, snarkily wondering what its motivations and demands will be. It is a reasonable–and presently unanswerable–question, since the group hasn’t really explained its outrage, and is even now asking for suggestions for its rally cry on its Facebook page.
The idea behind the movement is to occupy Wall Street and the general downtown area for two months. The group already announced a “General Assembly” meeting …

Ten Years Later

As the ten year anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center looms near, many people are looking at the developments at Ground Zero, as well as the effects that the attacks had on New York City generally. The cultural, psychological, and emotional impacts of 9/11 cannot be overstated. Not since Pearl Harbor was there such an enormous attack on American soil, and never before had there been a foreign attack on an American city, let alone the cultural and social capital of the nation (and, arguably, the world). …

Michelin Guide for Restaurants Names Twelve Places for Cheap Bites

Every year the world famous Michelin Guide produces a list of “bib gourmand” restaurants. These hotspots offer delicious meals at a low price–the cutoff point for the guide is $40. For this price or less, each restaurant offers two courses and a glass of wine or dessert. The list usually uncovers some hidden gems in New York City, and this year is no different.
Among the list, a total of twelve Midtown eateries made the cut, and each of them is worth a visit. The Midtown spots in full are:

9/11 Memorial Open to the Public

The new 9/11 memorial, including the reflecting pool at the heart of Ground Zero, is now open to the public. The somber spot has been in the works for years, and it is only fitting for it to be finally open a full decade after the tragedy.
Besides the pool, the memorial also includes a museum replete with artifacts from the twin towers, photos relevant to the rescue effort, and a number of tributes to the men and women who died that day.
There is also an exhibition about the original twin …
