Yours truly is a huge HGTV fan. Back when the Home and Garden network was just a small Canadian station with classic renovation shows like Debbie Travis’ Facelift and Candice Olson’s Divine Design, I was an avid watcher. I’ve seen pretty much every House Hunters episode out there, and while the potential homeowners trek across every city in the country, they’ve never been to New York. Given that I live here in our fantastic city, I’ve always been a bit disappointed in the lack of coverage of the real estate hunt here in Manhattan. How does one hunt for an apartment in the most expensive city in the world? (Okay, maybe Paris gets that title – but New York is definitely close).

Fast foward to March 18th, 2010, the day on which the new reality show, Selling New York will premiere on my favorite channel. Looks like someone at HGTV wised up and realized that some of us do actually buy real estate in NYC. The tagline for the show reads, “They’re not selling real estate. They’re selling New York,” and I can’t wait! I’m predicting this show will be a huge hit. Granted, it might be better suited for a network like Bravo, but like I said, I’m happy to see HGTV expanding its horizons. In a bit of promotional press, the real estate agents featured on Selling New York chatted with the NY Post.

“When we signed on to do the show we had no work, there was no market, and so we figured why not do a show? We certainly have the time. But by the time we started filming, we were too busy with clients to shoot during the weekdays,” broker Michelle Kleier said.

Any tidbits of wisdom on what it’s like to sell in New York? “Address is by far the biggest status symbol for New Yorkers. Some people are very insecure,” Kleier said. “We had clients who were sending out their wedding invitations and they only wanted a Fifth Avenue address. They ended up in a tiny apartment with a Fifth Avenue address, but the entrance wasn’t even on Fifth and their windows faced a wall.”

Will you watch Selling New York? Selling New York will premiere at 8 PM, March 18th on HGTV.
